Note: A former county in northeastern England. It was formed in 1974 from parts of the East and West Ridings of Yorkshire and the northern part of Lincolnshire; it was dissolved in 1996 and administrative powers were devolved to the unitary authorities of North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, and Kingston-upon-Hull. It extended along the North Sea coast and across both banks of Humber River. It is one of country's driest regions. It was one of first districts to be settled by Anglo-Saxons, who established kingdoms of Deria and Lindsey. There are many port towns, railways, and parish churches here.
