Note: Kingdom that included an area twice the size of present-day Laos. Luang Phrabang was seat of royalty, but capital moved to Vientiane in 1560. Decreased in power and territory after invasions by the Vietnamese (1449) and the Burmese (1563). Lan Xang was divided into three smaller kingdoms by the beginning of the 18th century.
