Note: The Bulgarian town of Hisarja is noted for its ancient burials in area, especially those from the Bessi tribe, Thracians, and Macedonians. The Romans developed the town for its mineral springs. The Goths in 251 CE sacked it. It flourished once again under the Byzantine Empire, but was sacked by marauding Crusaders. It was taken over by the Ottoman Empire in 1364. Today it is known primarily as a hot mineral spa resort.
