Note: The town of Pazardzhik is in west-central Bulgaria, situated on the Maritsa River. The area around the town has been settled since at least 2000 BCE, the town itself founded by Russian Tatars. It was a part of the Ottoman Empire from the 15th to the 19th century. Its main historic structure is the Church of the Virgin Mary, half-buried beneath the soil and decorated with masterpieces of Bulgarian carving. The town today is a rail junction and industrial center, specializing in food processing, rubber, textiles, and furniture. Its 2003 estimated population was 78,900.
