Note: Montana is a town in northwestern Bulgaria located on the Ogosta River in an area noted for its rich agriculture and forested land. The site was settled by the Romans under the name Montanensia. Renamed Mikhaylovgrad after the Second World War, it was given its present name in 1993 with the fall of the Communists in Bulgaria. The town is a market for the grains, fruits, wines, market-garden produce, and livestock produced locally. It has some light industry. The 2003 estimated population was 49,000. |
