Note: There was a Roman Claudian legionary fortress here, founded ca. 55 CE, 18 km from the estuary of the river Usk. Demolished and rebuilt by a smaller fort ca. 75 CE that was in turn dismantled in the early 2nd century when an extensive civil settlement developed and continued into the 4th century. During this later period, it became a center of iron production.
