Note: Historic area in Europe, being a valley high in the eastern Pyrenees, east of Andorra in the Spanish province of Gerona and the French departments of Ariège and Pyrénées-Orientales. The ancient inhabitants were the Ceretani. It passed to the counts of Rousillon in 1276. Thirty-three Cerdagne communities were ceded to France by Spain in 1659. The principal economic activity there is zinc mining. |
