Note: The city was a prominent Abbasside center and was the favorite residence of Harun al-Rashid. The city was a stop along the Silk Road. It was the home of Arab astronomer al-Battani 9th-10th century, and later destroyed by Mongol invasions in the 13th century. The town was revived after the building of the Tabaqah Dam in 1968. Today it is a regional commercial center.
