Note: County Cork in the Irish province of Munster is the largest county in Ireland, measuring some 2,880 square miles in area. It consists primarily of broad valleys and lowlands, with west to east stretching hills and uplands. The county historically was a subkingdom of the ancient kingdom of Munster, ruled by the MacCarthy clan until the Anglo-Norman invasion in the 12th century and the ascendancy of the clan Fitzgerald. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cork was the scene of many uprisings against British domination. Cork Harbor has been a busy seaport since the 17th century. Industries include oil-storage depots, food processing, and manufacturing, including the production of tweed in rural factories. Agriculture, particularly the raising of livestock, remains the main economic activity. The Cork village of Blarney is famous for its historic castle. The beautiful rugged coastline attracts many tourists. The 2003 estimated population was 452,900.
