Note: Mnichovo Hradiště is a small town north of Prague in the Středočeský region of the north-central Czech Republic. It is famous for its landmark castle, built by Wallenstein in the late 17th century. In the Baroque style, a rebuilding of a Renaissance castle itself built upon the ruins of a medieval fortress. It houses a collection of Delft pottery and Japanese and Chinese porcelain and miniatures. The castle is attached to a former monastery, of which there remains the Church of Three Kings, built from 1694 to 1699, connected with the richly decorated St. Ann's Chapel. It also has a theatre built in 1833 for the presentation of court spectacles. The castle is set within a large park in two different portions, one in the French style and one in the English. The town's museum contains artifacts from nearby prehistoric settlements. Tourism is the major economic activity of the town. |
