Hierarchy of Baden (former administrative division)  Baden (former administrative division)

Note: Former state in the southwestern corner of Germany, located on the east bank of the Rhine River. It comprised the eastern half of the Rhine River valley, the Schwarzwald, and other adjoining mountains. Ancient Baden was occupied by Celts, then by Germanic peoples, then was conquered by Rome in the 1st century CE. In the 3rd century, Rome gave up the region to the Alemanni. By the 8th century, the Franks conquered and occupied the area, at which time it became Christian. The Margrave of Baden originated in 1112 under the house of Zähringen, but was subsequently divided along religious lines into Baden-Baden and Baden-Durlach. It was again unified in 1771. With the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1803-1806, Baden developed into the larger Grand Duchy of Baden, a sovereign country. It joined the German Empire in 1871, remaining a Grand Duchy until 1918 when it became part of the Weimar Republic. It now forms the western part of the Baden-Württemberg state of modern Germany.
