Note: Neighborhood formerly (until 1965) part of the metropolitan borough of St. Marylebone. It is located to the south and west of Regent's Park and north of Mayfair. The name Marylebone derives from a medieval church constructed on the banks of the Tyburn and called St. Mary-by-the-Bourne, later Maryburne. The manor house (demolished 1791) was converted into a hunting lodge by Henry VIII, and Marylebone Gardens, adjoining the manor house, was the site of spectacles, sporting events, and concerts from the mid-17th century until 1778. Estates and terraced houses were built in the area from the 18th century, and blocks of apartments were constructed in the 20th century. Next to the Georgian residences of Manchester Square is Hertford House (1776-1788), home of the renowned Wallace Collection. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is on Baker Street here and Madame Tussaud's wax museum and the London Planetarium are also here. Other notable buildings include the Royal Academy of Music, All Souls Church, the historic women's school of Queen's College (1848), and Wigmore Hall (1901; renovated 1993), where chamber music concerts are held.
