Founded in 1584 as a fort and monastery, it was the Russian Empire's principal seaport until the founding of St. Petersburg in 1703, and was the first Russian port to conduct trade with England and later other countries. It declined as St. Petersburg flourished. Recovering somewhat in the late 19th century, its industries are timber exporting, fishing, and papermaking. The 2003 estimate of population is 352, 300.
