Hierarchy of Mauretania (general region)  Mauretania (general region)

Note: Area of ancient northwestern Africa, west of Numidia, corresponding to present northern Morocco and western and central Algeria north of the Atlas Mountains. Its native inhabitants, seminomadic pastoralists of Berber stock, were known to the Romans as the Mauri and the Massaesyli; Phoenicians and Carthaginians also settled along the coast from the 6th century BCE. From the late 2nd century BCE, the kings of Mauretania were Roman vassals. Annexed to Rome in 42 CE and divided into two provinces: Mauretania Tingitana, with its capital at Tingis, and Mauretania Caesariensis, with its capital at Caesarea. Invaded by Vandals in the 5th century CE; later taken by Muslim Arabs.
