Note: Metropolitan county in northeastern England with an area of 787 sq mi (2039 sq km), created in 1974 from the western part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1986 the county council was abolished and administrative power devolved to the new unitary authorities of Bradford, Leeds, Calderdale, Kirklees, and Wakefield. Coalmining was formerly important but has declined. West Yorkshire remains the center of the English wool textile industry. Comprises deep valleys and woodlands; Pennine uplands occupied by Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians; seat of baronial power in Middle Ages and battles during War of Roses (1455-1485); steam power, mining, and waterpower stimulated growth during Industrial Revolution.
