Note: Pre-Roman and Romano-British town in the territory of the Catuvellauni tribe, across the River Ver from what is now St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England. It was occupied by Romans in 44-45 CE.but destroyed by Boudicca, queen of the Iceni, in 60-61; Verulamium was rebuilt 15 years later under Vespasian. It was devastated by a fire during the reign of Antonius Pius and the city was rebuilt again before the end of the 2nd century. St. Alban was martyred here ca. 304. The site was deserted in the late 5th century. The growth of a new settlement at St. Albans across the river has left the Roman town open to excavation. The ruins of Varulamium include the forum, a theater associated with a Romano-Celtic temple, a market hall, two triumphal arches, fragments of the town wall, and many houses with fine mosaics and wall paintings. |
