Note: The city of Heidenheim is located on Brenz River in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. There was a Roman settlement on the site. The medieval town was chartered in 1356. It is noted as the death place of St. Walburga in the 8th century, in whose name is held an annual witches' festival. It has been the site of traditional shepherds' competitions since 1723. Its historic architecture features the ruins of eleventh-century Hellenstein Castle high on a hill overlooking the city. The 2004 estimated population was 50,800. |
