Note: Garmisch-Partenkirchen is located at the junction of the Loisach and Partnach Valleys in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany at the foot of the Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany. The town is the unification of two old villages, Garmisch and Partenkirchen, and was only chartered in 1935. It was the site of the Winter Olympics in 1936. It was planned to be a last retreat for Nazi leaders, but was taken by the Allies in April, 1945. Its historic architecture includes the Old Church of St. Martin, built in medieval times, the Baroque New Church of St, Martin, and the 18th-century Pilgrimage Church. The 2004 estimated population was 26,700. |
