Note: The German town of Andernach is situated on the left bank of the Rhine river some dozen miles northwest of Coblenz. Its location has historically been an important strategic site. The Romans built a large fortress here in 12 BCE. Here Charles the Bald, king of the West Franks, was defeated by Louis the Younger in 876 CE. The Holy Roman Emperor Otto I defeated his rebellious brother here in 939, and Lothair III defeated Henry V here in 1114. In 1253 it became a member of the Hanseatic League. The French army burned it in 1689, then occupied it in 1795. It was given to Prussia in 1815. In World War II the Allies took it in March 1945. The city today still has a 12th-century watchtower and a 13th-century parish church. The 2005 population estimate was 28,089.
