Note: Helsingor is a seaport city in the Frederiksberg county commune, located on the island of Zealand at the narrowest part of The Sound, opposite Hälsingborg, Sweden. In medieval times it was the site of the ferry crossing to Sweden, and prospered from the tolls attached to that crossing until 1857, when the toll was abolished. The city is famed as the site of Kronborg Slot, the castle of Elsinore in Shakespeare's Hamlet. It was built between 1574 and 1785, was altered somewhat in the 17th century, and fully restored in the late 1920s. Other historic structures include the Gothic St. Olaf's Church, a Carmelite monastery founded in 1430, and a royal chateau that has housed a Hamlet collection since 1930. Major economic activities include tourism, shipbuilding, port commerce, and rubber manufacture. The 1994 population estimate was 56,785.
