Note: Site of an ancient city fortress located on a cliff above the Mediterranean Sea. Town was established by Phoenicians in the 6th cen. BCE; was production center for purple dye derived from murex mollusks. Later ruled by Persians, Seleucids, and Romans. Was razed by Mamluks and abandoned, although a few families lived amongst the ruins until 1948. The modern community of Arsuf is located north of the ancient city.
