Note: Andalucía, the historic region of southern Spain, covers very nearly the territory of the ancient Roman province of Baetica. The Moors arrived in the eighth century. and applied the name "al-Andalus" to the entire Iberian Peninsula. The name came to refer only to the southern area retained by the Moors after the Christian invasion. In the early 11th century Andalucía split into small Muslim kingdoms. It was overcome and absorbed by the Christian kingdom of Castile by the late 15th century. See also the modern region of Spain called Andalucía.
