The bishops of Speyer ruled it from 1065, then the counts of Sponheim were in power here from 1241. It received its town charter in 1290. It sustained heavy damage during the Thirty Years War of the 16th to the 17th century. In 1689 the French destroyed it. It was ceded to Prussia in 1815. Due to its mineral springs, it became a popular spa in the 19th century. Today it remains a well-known health resort and does a thriving commerce in wine. The 2005 population estimate was 43, 319.
