A secessionist movement in the late 1980s began, with extensive fighting in 1991, ending in a cease fire brokered by Russia in 1992. In 1993, the South Ossetian government declared themselves a republic, however this was not internationally recognized. Fighting commenced again in 2008, with tensions continuing after a French-brokered cease fire. The region declared its independence in 2008, however, only several countries including Russia, recognize its independence, against international criticism.
