Note: Historical empire consisting of territories controlled by the Chola dynasty. Mentioned in the first centuries of the common era. From the 9th century on, Chola emerged as the most powerful of the three Pandyan states, and participated in trade with China. Chola's oldest capital was Uraiyur, in present-day Tiruchirappalli. The court was known for its patronage of art and architecture.
