Note: Province in northwestern Îrān. Ardabil comes from Artavil, referred to in the Zoroastrian holy book of Avesta. A type of painted pottery popular during the Parthian dynasty (550-331 BCE) known as Ardabīl is attributed to this area. The city dates to the Sassanian dynasty (226-651 CE), however, experienced little growth until the Arab invasion in 7th century CE. In 1220, the Mongols destroyed the city. During the Safavid dynasty (1501-1732), Ardabīl became an important center for the Sufi order of Islam. Through the patronage of the Safavid rulers, the descendants of leader Sheykh Safi al-Din Ishaq, his tomb became an important shrine. |
