Note: Neighborhood of Hamburg, known as being the location of a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. The camp was established as a slave-labor camp in late 1938, and became a concentration camp in 1940. More than 82,000 prisoners died at Neuengamme and its satellite camps, from malnutrition, disease, exhaustion, from the effects of medical experiments. The camp was liberated by the British in May of 1945. Before liberation, thousands of prisoners had been transferred to other concentration camps, and 2,000 had been placed on a ship in a Hamburg Bay. The British, unaware prisoners were being kept on the boat, sank the ship during bombing, and only 600 survived.
