The ruins offer the best known evidence of ancient Roman private life; one of three sites grouped together in an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and noted for their well-preserved remains due to ash covering. The modern town of Ercolano is in part built on the ancient ruins of Herculaneum, but most of the ancient site, and the officially designated historical monument, lies south of the town center.
