Note: The city of Karlsruhe is located near the Rhine River on the edge of the Black Forest in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. It was founded as a residence by the margrave of Baden-Durlach, Karl Wilhelm, in 1715, who built a castle there near his hunting lodge. The city was designed on a radial plan around the tower of the castle with most of its important public building designed in the Neoclassical style. There are many museums, educational institutions, and the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. An industrial harbor was built on the Rhine in 1901. Severely damaged in World War II; today its factories produce machinery, bicycles, and radio equipment. It has oil refineries with pipelines to Strasbourg, Marseilles, and Ingolstadt, as well as a nuclear reactor and research center. Its 2004 estimated population was 283,000.
