Note: Town in north-central Austria, and site of a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. The camp was established as a sub-camp of the Mauthausen concentration camp and was in operation from 1944-1945. Prisoners were deprived of food and clothing, and forced to work in underground tunnels. At least 8,200 prisoners died, or were killed, at the Ebensee camp. The camp was liberated by U.S. forces in early May of 1945. A memorial and museum exists on the site today.
