First mentioned in 1163, the town developed around an existing castle, and received its charter in 1273 from the count of Cleves. Its economic activities include sawmilling, coal mining, and the production of a wide variety of products such as wine, shoes, garments, steel-rolling equipment, and electrical equipment. The population estimate for 2004 was 71,300. |
