Note: Valley in northwest Afghanistan, in the Bāmyān province; was a Silk Road trading center between China and India in the early centuries CE; it is famed as a Buddhist monastic center and for art work, including cave paintings and rare monumental standing Buddha statues; the statues are believed to have been destroyed by the conservative Islamic Taliban regime between 1998 and 2001.
