Note: Reputed to be the oldest city in Korea, and located on the far eastern routes of the Silk Road. Recorded history began in 108 BCE with founding of a Chinese trading colony nearby. The city was captured by Japan in the 1590s. It was an industrial center under Japanese rule from 1910-1945. Damaged in Korean War, but largely rebuilt after 1953.
