Note: One of the great cities of the world during Hellenistic and Roman times. It stood in Mesopotamia, on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the smaller town of Ctesiphon. Founded by Seleucus I Nicator, Seleucia was the city that superseded Babylon as the center of the Seleucid Empire. It was located approximately 20 miles south of modern Baghdād, and Pliny the Elder listed the population as 600,000. It was conquered by Parthians in 140 BCE yet remained a Hellenistic city until the 1st century CE. The Parthians favored Ctesiphon as their capital. Seleucia was later burned to the ground by the Romans in 165 CE. Excavation of the site began in 1927. |
