Note: Former kingdom, notably ruled by women, located in present-day Angola. Active from before the 16th century, the kingdom was conquered by neighboring ruler Njinga, and fought against the Portuguese until a truce in 1656. Matamba, despite civil wars, had largely friendly relations with the Portuguese until the 19th century, when conflict increased. After 1909, Matamba was enveloped into Portuguese Angola.
