Note: Ancient kingdom in southwestern Iran where matrilineal succession eventually flourished. Dominated by the Akkadians in the middle of the 3rd millennium BCE. After subsequent invasions by the Guti and the 3rd dynasty of Ur, Elam reemerged in the late 13th century BCE. Again invaded by Babylon and Assyria; in the 7th century became a province of the Achaemenid dynasty.
