Note: Controversial hydro-electric dam built along the Yangtze River near Yichang in the Hubei province. Plans for a dam along the Yangtze had been proposed since 1919, but economic and political conditions hampered the project until 1989, when it was finally approved. In 1994, resettlement began for the rural populations that might be effected by the rising water. The 181-meter tall dam and 370-mile long resevoir was created for purposes of increasing power and electricity and approximately 1,200 archeological sites were submerged when the dam began to be filled.
