Note: Ancient Roman town southwest of Burgos on the dramatic plateau of "Alto de Castro"; it was founded during the reign of Tiberius (14-37) in Cantabrian Wars aftermath. It was the hub of the Roman Hispania province of Tarraconensis and served as its capital. Clunia was a major pottery-making center; it also featured an impressive 7,000-seat theater, the largest of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula. Clunia is also noted for its well-preserved mosaic floors and its underground water source that can only be reached by scuba-diving archaeologists. The site was finally abandoned in the mid-5th century. Excavations are ongoing.
