Note: 30 km SW of Jerusalem; near modern Revadim; inscription found in 1996 confirms the site was ancient Ekron, 1 of 5 Iron Age (1200-600 BCE) Philistine capitals mentioned in the Bible & Assyrian annals; a NE acropolis & temple complex have been excavated; center for olive oil processing; other artifacts reveal textile industry & extensive foreign contact; city especially prosperous during the 7th cen. BCE when city was linked with the Neo-Assyrian Empire; fell to the Babylonians in 603 BCE. |
