Note: Ancient city and hub of ancient routes, including the Silk Road between the Near East and China. It was the capital of the kingdom of Partha for a time. It may have been in decline when the Seleucids revived it as a military outpost about 300 BCE. It was documented by Pliny, Strabo, and Ptolemy as the Arsacid capital. Its exact location is unknown, but it is generally believed to have lay between the modern Iranian cities Damghan and Shahrud. |
