Note: The town of Jajce is situated on the Vrbas River, 29 miles south of Banja Luka. It was the ancient capital of the Bosnian kingdom. It was taken by the Turks in 1461, then by Hungary in 1463. It fell again under Turkish rule from 1528 until occupied by Austria in 1878. It became part of the former Yugoslavia after World War I, and was the center for Communist resistance against Nazi Germany in World War II. It was the site of the founding provisional parliament of tFederal Republic of Yugoslavia 1943. The modern town boasts the tourist attraction of old wooden Turkish water mills on the rapids of the Pliva River, near where it flows into the Vrbas River. Its 2004 estimated population was 10,000.
