Note: The site was originally settled by several Native American Tribes. "Indian fighters" and others of European descent entered the area in the 18th century. The area of Kent was part of Franklin Township in the Connecticut Western Reserve of 1798. It was settled ca. 1805 by John and Jacob Haymaker, who named it Riedsburg. In the mid-19th century, two villages had grown up here: Carthage and Franklin Mills. It was eventually united under the name of "Franklin MIlls." After considering the name "Rockton," it was finally renamed "Kent" in 1864 to honor Marvin Kent, promoter of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad. Community growth was further stimulated by the foundation in 1910 of a state normal school, later Kent State University. |
