Note: Small cathedral city on high fenland; Saxons took their last stand against the Normans here; Etheldreda, daughter of the king of the E. Angles, founded a monastery here in 673; sacked by Danes in 870; rebuilt in the 12th century as an abbey and made a cathedral in 1109 when the diocese of Ely was created; famous octagonal tower completed in 1342.
