Note: Busy market town; connected with water transport system during the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century. Stone for York and York Minster was quarried here. Tadcaster was an important center settled by Brigantes, Saxons, and Danes. The Roman town of Calcaria was 3.2 km to the north. Tadcaster was once considered within the boundaries of West Yorkshire.
