Note: Auch was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. French pilgrimage routes to Compostela tend to follow old Roman roads, many of which continued to be utilized as primary roads of communication during the Middle Ages. Auch was once the chief town of the Ausci (a Celtiberian tribe) which was ravaged by Saracens in 732 CE. During the Middle Ages it was to become capital of Armagnac region. In the 17th century it became the capital of the generality of Gascony. Historical sites in Auch include the Cathedral of Sainte Marie, Archiepiscopal Palace and Canons' House, Priory of Saint Orens, Chapel of Saint Clair, and Hospital of Saint Jacques.
