Note: Located on Dundalk Bay near the mouth of the Castletown River, the town is the legendary birthplace and site of the death of Cuchulain, a Gaelic hero. The town was captured by Edward Bruce in 1315, taken by Edward II of England in 1318, and given fortified walls by Henry IV. Often besieged, the walls were razed in 1747. In the present day it is the administrative center of County Louth, a seaport and railway junction and has railway workshops, distilleries, and breweries. Its products include flour, tobacco, cigarettes, bacon, shoes, clothing, computers, and electrical components. Its 2003 estimated population was 33,800. |
