Note: The city of Osnabrück is located on the canalized Hase River between Teutoburg Forest and Wiehengebirge in the Weser-Ems district of the northwestern German state of Lower Saxony. Charlemagne founded a bishopric here in 785 on an earlier Saxon settlement. It received its charter in 1171 and became a member of Hanseatic League, best known for its fine linen. It accepted the Reformation in 1543, but the Peace of Westphalia, signed there in 1648, declared that alternating bishops should be Protestant and Roman Catholic. The bishopric was secularized in 1803 and ceded to Hanover, but was re-established as Catholic again in 1858. It was heavily damaged in World War II, nevertheless some of its historic structures did survive, including the bishop's palace built 1667-90, the town hall built 1487-1512, and two Gothic churches, In 1970 was founded the University of Osnabrück there. The economic activities of the modern city include the manufacture of automotive equipment, machinery, textiles, paper, and chemicals. Locally there are saline springs and moated castles. The 2004 estimated population was 165,000. |
