Note: The city of Soest is located in the Arnsberg district of the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Occupied since Roman times, it was first documented under the name of Sosat in 836. It was the chief urban area of Westphalia in medieval times, receiving its charter in the 12th century, and became an influential member of the Hanseatic League. The archbishop-princes of Cologne ruled the city until the 15th century, when it came under the rule of the count of Mark, then of the house of Brandenburg in 1614. Although it was bombarded and damaged in World War II, a good deal of its old churches and the old city walls, including the gatehouse of 1526 remain. Notable is the cathedral of St. Patroclus, founded in 955 and expanded in 1166, which houses important Lutheran archives and a renowned Protestant theological library. The modern city has some light industry, and serves as a major cattle and produce market for its area. The 2004 estimated population was 48,400.
