Note: The town of Coburg is located on the Itz River in northern Bavaria, Germany in the foothills of the Thuringian Forest. It was a noted medieval center. It passed to the house of Wettin in 1353. It was a strategically important fortified town from the 15th century, withstanding several sieges during the Thirty Years War of 1618-1648. With the town of Gotha, it alternated as the capital of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha from 1826 to 1918. The castle of the dukes of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha Coburg was renovated in the early 20th century and houses fine art collections. That ducal family line has produced several European monarchs, including that of the United Kingdom. Their residence, converted from a suppressed monastery in 1543, now houses a fine library and several art collections. Local industries include lumber and paper milling, breweries, and the manufacture of textiles, glass, and toys. The 2004 estimated population was 42,600. |
