Note: Ostfriesland is an area in the northwestern German state of Lower Saxony on the North Sea, including the East Frisian Islands. It is culturally aligned with West Friesland in the Netherlands and North Friesland on the west coast of the Jutland Peninsula. The population migrated to Ostfriesland from Holland in the 12th century. Historically it was a duchy that passed to Prussia in 1744. Its ownership changed several times during French Revolutionary Wars, and it became part of Hanover in 1815. Modern economic activities are predominantly cattle raising, dairying, and meat processing. The area is known as the original home of the famous Friesen dairy black and white cattle usually incorrectly called Holsteins. The area is also known for its traditional farmhouse, the Diele, consisting of one huge slanting roof covering a threshing floor, stables, and human living quarters.
